Your Kitchen Cabinets: Light or Dark?

Posted on November 5th, 2011

I am loving these either/or questions…and I want to hear your thoughts on this one – kitchen cabinets: light or dark?  Imagine you are planning on renovating your kitchen, which cabinets would you choose – white or a natural wood finish (i.e., cherry, mahogany, etc.)?  Or you are touring homes to potentially buy, and you love everything about one house in particular except the dark wood kitchen cabinets.  Do you walk away from the home, live with them or change them?

I just renovated my kitchen last year; it was an original kitchen from 1972.  And to say that it needed renovating is an understatement.  A few of the floor tiles were split, the wood on some of the kitchen cabinets was cracked off, the formica countertops had taken a beating….  And my choice for the kitchen cabinets was to go white, and I’m so happy I did.  I love my white cabinets; I think they brighten the kitchen and provide a look that is clean, crisp and fresh.  Though as I think about this a bit more, I must admit that I was very happy with the cherry kitchen cabinets in my first Weston, MA house.  They brought a warm and cozy feel to the room – and they didn’t show stains, which is always important when you have little ones….

What are your thoughts on the subject?  Do you prefer kitchen cabinets that are light or dark?  I can’t wait to hear….
