The Weston/METCO Program and an Evening of Festivities
Posted on March 24th, 2012
Last night was a special night in Weston, MA, and I was honored to be a part of it. Not only was it the annual Weston/METCO Potluck Supper, it was also a recognition event for David Fuller (pictured here), the Weston/METCO Director and High School Liaison, and his 27 years of service to the students and the program.
But first a little background information…. According to the Weston Public Schools website, “Since 1967, Weston has participated in METCO, (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity), a voluntary, desegregation program which brings approximately 167 students, grades K-12, from Boston to Weston’s schools. Two hundred and forty-nine students have graduated from Weston High School through the Weston/METCO Program. Some graduates have returned as parents of second-generation students or to serve on committees that support the program.” There are several other surrounding towns, such as Wellesley, Wayland, Needham, and Lincoln, which participate in the METCO program as well.
Our family has just this year started participating in the Family Friends group, “which extends the METCO program beyond the walls of the classroom. Under the program, each Boston student who enters the Weston Public Schools is paired with a Weston student. The Family Friends’ component of the Weston/METCO Program offers families from both communities an opportunity to share urban and suburban experiences.” One of the biggest events of the Family Friends program is the Annual Potluck Dinner, which took place last night. The evening was filled with touching speeches in honor of David Fuller given by the many participants of the Weston/METCO program, an array of photo opportunities with him surrounded by the families, and the presentation of a delicious cake made to commemorate him (pictured here). The night also featured a raffle with amazing prizes, face painting, kids dancing and running around to the music of D.J. Labbe, all kinds of tasty food provided by the Weston and METCO families and so much more. It was an incredible and special evening, and it was obvious by the outpouring of words and emotions that we have been lucky and blessed to have David Fuller as the Weston/METCO Director for all these years….
