To Sign or Not To Sign?

Posted on January 4th, 2011

That is the question….  When selling your home, should you put a “For Sale” sign in front of your property or not?  I was just discussing this topic with a client from Weston, MA earlier today.  From a real estate marketing perspective, the answer is an overwhelming “YES,” especially if you live on a well-travelled road.  I have consistently been told that signage accounts for 11% of sales.  Furthermore it provides increased visibility, increased chatter and increased awareness for the sale of a house.  This is all good, and even more so when combined with advertising, direct mail, open houses and other marketing efforts to promote the property.

But there is more to this question and subsequent decision than just the real estate marketing perspective.  The answer to the question, “To sign or not to sign,” ultimately comes down to you and your feelings about selling your house.  Is the sale of your home something you want to shout from the rooftop in an effort to increase activity as mentioned above or is it something about which you would like to be discreet?  Some people want a bit more privacy and don’t want all of the visibility, chatter and awareness about their house being on the market.  So really, there isn’t a right or wrong answer to this question.  And the decision is ultimately yours, because after all, it has to do with the sale of your home and nobody else’s.  My suggestion is to make the decision with both your mind and your heart – that way you will never go wrong…..

Is this decision something with which you have wrestled when selling your home?  I would love to hear….
