The Buzz on Last Night’s 2012 Oscars
Posted on February 27, 2012
I’m so curious to hear your thoughts…. What did you think of last night’s 84th Academy Awards Ceremony, a.k.a the 2012 Oscars? And even more, what did you think of the fashion choices? This year, I decided to do it a bit differently. Because there were so many fabulous dresses, I put five into the “Best Dressed” category instead of just one. And instead of calling it “Worst Dressed,” I heard the ladies on The Talk refer to it as, “Could Have Done Better,” and I think that’s a perfect way to say it. There are five “Could Have Done Better” as well.
Before I get started, “Best Dressed” to me is the whole enchilada. It’s not just how the dress fits and looks; it’s the way the body type, skin color, hair, jewelry and any other accessories (i.e., cape, purse/clutch, date for the evening) complements or enhances the woman’s look. Similarly “Could Have Done Better” alludes to the entire look of the person. So anyway, the kids and I voted, and here are our choices…..
Best Dressed (alphabetically by last name)
Angelina Jolie (pictured here) – I was a big fan of this Versace black, thigh-exposing dress. As is often the case, Angelina looked like quite a starlet. Not only did she “work the room,” she also “worked the dress” by very dramatically baring her leg every chance she got. (As an aside, her leg now has its own Twitter account – @AngiesRightLeg.) I also loved her hair down and free-flowing. And of course, the red lipstick is signature Angie.
Stacy Keibler – Oscar might have said that Stacy was his “mini me.” There were many remarks that she looked like an Oscar statue herself, and she did. But wow did she look beautiful in her gold Marchesa dress. And having George Clooney as an accessory didn’t hurt her look either – let’s just say it was eye candy for the rest of us. And I think I like Stacy even more now that I know she hails from my same home town of Baltimore, MD. Go hon – as they say in Bawlmer.
Gwyneth Paltrow – I thought Gwyneth’s white Tom Ford gown with a cape looked incredible. And at first glance, I loved her hair – I thought she had cut it to her shoulder giving her a stylish, sassy look. But alas, she had her hair in a low pony tail, and I was disappointed by that.
Octavia Spencer – I must say that I think I liked Octavia’s lavender Golden Globes dress a bit better, but this silvery-white dress, also by Tadashi Shoji, was pretty spectacular. It complimented her curves flawlessly. And I just need to add that she seems like such a nice, down-to-earth person. She makes eye contact with the person who is interviewing her, listens to the questions and gives thoughtful answers. It’s not always that way in Hollywood. Thumbs up to Octavia all around!
Emma Stone (pictured here) – a lot of people thought this red Giambattista Valli dress was too “old” for Emma and thought it evoked Nicole Kidman’s 2007 Oscar gown designed by Balenciaga. But I thought it was exquisite and made quite a statement. I loved the red color as well as the bow at the top of the dress – it “tied” the look all together.
Could Have Done Better (also alphabetically by last name)
Sandra Bullock – this surprised me. I am no haute couture critic, but even I could tell that this black-and-white Marchesa dress didn’t fit her. The top was completely hanging off her in a less-than-complimentary way. I noticed this the first minute I laid my eyes on her…. Hmmm – what was she, and her stylist, thinking?
Sacha Baron Cohen (pictured here) - he was dressed as The Dictator, his role in his upcoming comedy movie, and claimed his uniform was designed by John Galliano with his socks from Kmart. He then proceeded to drop the “ashes” of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il all over Ryan Seacrest. Oops. Ryan seemed to recover, however. He quickly donned another jacket that he happened to have at the ready. And then I saw an impromptu video of Ryan saying that he believed the “ashes” to be pancake mix, which he thought was ironic since he was trying to stay away from carbs all week so that his tuxedo would fit well. I thought only women did this kind of dieting prior to shows and events?? So anyway, what do you think – was the ash-dumping staged or real?
Melissa McCarthy – I absolutely loved Melissa in Bridesmaids, but in my opinion, her peach Marina Rinaldi dress needed to be more fitted. Plus I thought the color of the dress washed her out a bit. And although her loosely-pulled back hair did complement the look of the flowing dress, I thought it looked a little messy.
Viola Davis – people were raving about Viola’s look. They loved the emerald green Vera Wang dress (I think that color green is just not my color), and they loved her wig-less, natural hair. But to me, the green dress with the reddish-brown hue of her hair did not complement one another. I do love her, though, and I must say that I was sorry that she didn’t win Best Actress. Plus the fact that she is a New Englander by birth, hailing from Rhode Island, made her loss even more disappointing.
Berenice Bejo – this lime green Elie Saab gown was not my favorite. And when paired with the red color of her hair plus her coiled and austere hair-style, the overall look became less appealing. Can you tell that red and green together is not my favorite combination?
Anyway, these are our choices – what do you think? What were your fashion favorites and misses? And did you think JLo had a wardrobe malfunction? I can’t wait to hear…..
