Are You a Zodiac Junkie?

Posted on January 24, 2011

The reason I ask is because if you are, then you’ve probably already heard the big “news.”  And if you’re not, then you may not have.  The big “news” is that about 10 days ago, according to the Star-Tribune.com, Paul Kunkle, who teaches astronomy courses at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, reported that the moon’s gravitational pull has made the Earth “wobble” around its axis in a process called precession.  This in turn has created a one-month (approximately) change in the stars’ alignment.  Moreover, the “news” is that not only have astrologers been off by a month in their zodiac signs, but they are neglecting a 13th constellation, Ophiuchus (Ooh-FEE-yew-kus), the Serpent Bearer.  According to myth, Ophiuchus became a healer when he killed a snake and another appeared with an herb in his mouth that revived the dead one.

So back to the big “news.”  The reason that I am putting quotes around the word “news” is that – from what I can tell – this theory is still being debated.  In other words, the world at large has not adopted this theory as real and true.  (And just as an aside, from what I can ascertain, it’s a debate between astronomers and astrologers.)  But most importantly, if it indeed becomes approved and assumed by the world at large, then we will be facing some major changes and therefore consequences to our Zodiac lives.

If we follow this new theory, this is what the new Zodiac signs will be (source - Live Science.com):

  • Capricorn: January 20 – February 16 (formerly December 22 – January 19)
  • Aquarius: February 16 – March 11 (formerly January 20 – February 18)
  • Pisces: March 11 – April 18 (formerly February 19 – March 20)
  • Aries: April 18 – May 13 (formerly March 21 – April 19)
  • Taurus: May 13 – June 21 (formerly April 20 – May 20)
  • Gemini: June 21 – July 20 (formerly May 21 – June 20)
  • Cancer: July 20 – August 10 (formerly June 21 – July 22)
  • Leo: August 10 – September 16 (formerly July 23 – August 22)
  • Virgo: September 16 – October 30 (formerly August 23 – September 22)
  • Libra: October 30 – November 23 (formerly September 23 – October 22)
  • Scorpio: November 23 – 29 (formerly October 23 – November 21)
  • Ophiuchus: November 29 – December 17 (the new 13th sign was apparently a formation the ancient Babylonians discarded because they wanted 12 star signs, not 13)
  • Sagittarius: December 17 – January 20 (formerly November 22 – December 21)

This is big!  For example, my son who is born on September 4 will no longer be a Virgo, he will now be a Leo – which is my sign.  The stereotypical Virgo is “modest and hard-working” which seems to be in sharp contrast to the stereotypical Leo who is “exuberant and self-centered.”  How can this be?  Similarly my oldest daughter was supposed to be born a Scorpio but came early and was therefore a Libra.  I always firmly believed that this was because in her heart and soul, she was a Libra.  With this new Zodiac system, she would be a Virgo?!  Which was what my son was but now he’s a Leo?!  Hmmm…..

But the biggest change will be for those born between November 29 – December 17.  These people will have the completely new Zodiac sign of Ophiuchus. Wow.  What does this mean?  What are the traits of those born under the sign of Ophiuchus?  Which signs are most compatible with Ophiuchus?  And what kind of sign is Ophiuchus – fire, earth, water?  So many questions and unknowns!  For those who take the Zodiac signs and characteristics to heart, what will the implications of this new system be to their lives and personalities?  We’ll have to watch and listen carefully to find out what happens on this potentially new Zodiac front.  In the meantime, though, what are your thoughts about all this?  I can’t wait to hear……
